Objection is not rejection

In any negotiation (about time, scope, or quality of a thing to make) there is likely to be competing demands. A denied request for a six month extension to a project I may be running behind feels, at least initially, confrontational. But, perhaps the denial is just an opportunity to learn more? Why is 6 months not possible? Is 3 months possible? Does it need to be now? Why?

By gathering more context about the objection (which often feels like a rejection) we get more information to formulate a less confrontational way forward. With information comes power. With power, we end up in a better position to understand actual and imagined boundaries for the other party whilst protecting our own interests. None of that happens unless we ask for what we need in the first place, so perhaps it’s best to start there.
