For professional athletes, to be ‘machine-like’ is a good thing, a compliment. To return a perfect serve. To hit every green in regulation. To score 100% of penalty attempts. Those at the top of their game are machines – an almost robotic consistency with incredible accuracy. Perfect.But, no one ever calls an artist a machine.
There’s probably a reason for that.
Am I a software designer who practices art ‘on the side’ or is it the other way around?
Might I make better work if, at the end of everyday, I put everything back in its place – just like they do in commercial kitchens?
Are artists under threat from generative artificial intelligence? Or is the ‘competition’ we see just misunderstood?
What happens to an idea if I’m too scared to draw it? If I don’t feel skilled enough? If I’m just not ready?
Who or what am I really looking for when I put our work out in the world? How do I know it’s any good?
