Noodling is a word I use to describe when I’m messing around. A bit like play. Maybe there’s some idea, or starting point, that sits me down with a pencil in hand, but often there isn’t. Most of the time, when I sit down to draw for fun, I truly have no idea where the marks I’m making will go.
But, I also know that without a little noodling, I’ll never make a pasta. It’s become one of the most important parts of my art practice.
Most of us say we need more time but what if the opposite was true? What if less time helped us move forward?
Can the selfish act of making art become an act of generosity? What happens to others who come across the work we make for ourselves?
What value do grids and guides have in supporting and unlocking greater creativity in the art we make and the stories we tell?
Instead of over-thinking and using rational judgement, what if we were led to our next project by emotion?
Whilst I’ll never be like the artists I admire, it may also be true that they’ll never be like me.
